Protecting NYC's waterfront

You don't think of New York City as a waterfront community. But with more than 500 miles of coastal land, New York is one of the largest urban waterfront areas in the world. If Hurricane Sandy taught us anything, it is that we are vulnerable.

The Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance held a meeting with civic leaders, scientists and engineers to look at ways to best protect our region from future storms.

The gathering came just a day after City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a candidate for mayor, outlined a bold proposal to build seawalls, bulkheads, flood gates, and a system of underground power lines.

Critics, including Mayor Mike Bloomberg are quick to point out what they say are financial flaws with Quinn's multibillion-dollar plan.
