DMV hopes to open temporary site soon on SI

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - The Department of Motor Vehicles is hoping to open a temporary site soon to replace a Staten Island office damaged in Superstorm Sandy.

DMV spokesman Nicholas Cantiello says that for the time being, DMV employees have been assigned to other locations.

The Staten Island Advance says that on Wednesday, a steady stream of people were still showing up at the locked DMV office at West Shore Plaza.

Cantiello said residents can go to the DMV web site to register their vehicles and print out a 10-day temporary proof.

The DMV and other agencies are assisting storm victims at an NYC Restoration Center on Staten Island. However, services there are limited to replacing lost licenses and accepting license plates from vehicles totaled in the storm.
