Several homes on Cedar Grove Avenue on Staten Island were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.

Some are in pieces and others abandoned. But there's also a work of art: a painting of an American flag, a sign of beauty among the wreckage.

It is the work of native Staten Islander Scott LoBaido. He is an artist on a mission to lift spirits across the island, one American flag at a time.

He's painting them in neighborhoods hit hardest by the storm.

A New Dorp Beach homeowner gave him permission to use her condemned house as his canvas. And he painted a mural on Mansion Avenue in Great Kills, where boats nearby washed ashore.

LoBaido's most recent work of art is at Totten intermediate school.

One of its students, a 13-year-old girl named Angela Dresch, died during the hurricane. To make sure Angela is remembered, LoBaido painted her initials on an open book in the center of the flag.

Through his works of art, LoBaido said he hopes to bring color to his hometown.
