21 or under? Expect to show ID at Mall of America

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (KMSP) -

Between the holiday decorating and the growing crowds, it doesn't take long to spot kids of all ages strolling the Mall of America alone.

15-year-old Dillon Williams and 14-year-old Josh Meadows came with a friend, who they say had to leave. But within a few days Williams and Meadows won't be allowed to roam at the MOA without an adult by their side.

Mall management is expanding their Parental Escort Policy which currently only applies to Friday and Saturday nights.

This Thanksgiving, Black Friday and the entire week between Christmas and New Years Eve anyone under 16 years old will have to be with an adult over 21. They will have to show a government-issued ID to prove their age and students IDs won't cut it.

"When you tell them they can't do something that's going to make them mad and want to do it more," says Meadows.

Mall of America management adds anyone 21 or younger should be prepared for security to ask for .D or possibly forced to leave.

"It makes sense so I think it's a good idea especially when the mall is so busy at Christmas time," says Lindsay Schultz who was at the mall Sunday with three teenagers.

Schultz remembers the cell phone video of a fight at the MOA food court last year, just two days after Christmas. Eight adults and 11 teens ended up facing charges. Most mall goers we talked to applaud security efforts try and prevent the scene from repeating.

"Even if they are responsible independent people...I still think it's important to keep track of one another," says Karmen Lemke, who was shopping with her 14-year-old daughter.

To compare, FOX 9 checked with other metro malls. Rosedale, Southdale and Eden Prairie Center do not have any type of age restrictions for shoppers.
