Huntington among L.I. schools canceling winter break

Posted: Updated:

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (AP) - Long Island's Huntington and Copiague school districts have called off the entire 5-day midwinter break to make up for lost days due to Superstorm Sandy.

Newsday says the districts made the decision Monday night.

East Williston school district has decided to cancel 3 of the five days of the break.

Elmont, Hewlett-Woodmere and Rockville Centre are all scheduled to make decisions Tuesday night.

Seven other districts have announced plans to cancel all or most of the midwinter break. They are Cold Spring Harbor, Freeport, Harborfields, Locust Valley, Middle Country, Roslyn and South Huntington. Mineola has canceled two days.

Other districts are holding off making a decision until later this month. They want to see if the state will grant waivers from the required 180-day academic calendar.
