(Credit: Michigan.gov/dnr) Michigan White-tailed DeerThe 2012 firearm deer season is just days old and already the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is reporting the weather is making for enjoyable conditions for hunters.
Tracking snow is lacking in most areas and cool mornings have provided some of the best hunting conditions.
The DNR says deer license sales were up about 2 percent higher than at the same time last year with a total of nearly 640,000 hunters purchasing one or more Michigan deer licenses. The increase in license sales may be resulting in an increase in the number of hunters being reported in northern regions of the state. The number of hunters is about the same as in recent years in the Southern Lower Peninsula.
In the Upper Peninsula, most hunters say they are seeing more deer this year with some areas of the central U. P. reporting their highest numbers of deer checked in several years.
The firearm season remains open through November 30.
