Gwinnett officer involved in accident

Posted: Updated:

A Gwinnett County police officer was injured in a head-on collision in front of an elementary school on Friday morning, according to Gwinnett County authorities.

Authorities say the accident occurred at the entrance of Starling Elementary School at Grayson Parkway and Brackin Trace at around 5 a.m.

They say Officer H. McCall was in his patrol car, stopped in the left turn lane on Grayson Parkway northbound. A black Acura, driven by 50-year-old James Snyder, was heading southbound when he crossed the center lane into the northbound lanes and hit a concrete median. His vehicle then hit a sign before hitting McCall head-on.

McCall and Snyder were both transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with minor injuries. Police say they may be released later on Friday.

Police say Snyder was cited for failure to maintain a single lane and driving on the wrong side of the road. Police believe Snyder fell asleep at the wheel.

They say alcohol and speed were not factors in the accident.
