DETROIT (WJBK) -- Famous for her outbursts as city council president pro tem, Monica Conyers would become infamous for her breach of the public trust. She pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery while serving on the city council and was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for the role she and Sam Riddle played in the Synagro sludge deal.
Now in the last year of her sentence at "Camp Cupcake" in West Virginia, The Detroit News is reportingshe could be released to a halfway house in Detroit as early as next Monday.
"If I was her, I'd keep a low profile, but who knows," says longtime political consultant Adolph Mongo.
He is well aware keeping a low profile was never her strong suit.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons tells Fox 2 as a condition of her release to a halfway house, Monica Conyers would have to find a job.
"She's got a lot of friends, made a lot of friends," claims Mongo, plus he says her husband, Congressman John Conyers, has a lot of friends, as well, who could help with employment.
Mongo also says Monica has paid the price for her crimes.
"She messed up the brand name of Conyers.... Killed her career, can't take the bar, so she's suffering."
It's possible she could still face questions in the federal investigation of the city's pension fund from when she sat on the board.
"She should be prepared to face some other questions concerning the pension board indictments," says Mongo.
It's not clear just how long Monica Conyers could be in a halfway house. Her sentence is up in October of next year. A spokesperson with the Bureau of Prisons says if she qualifies, the last part of her sentence could be spent in home confinement.
Nobody answered the door at her home, but Mongo says he expects to see her soon.
"I think you're going to see her on the scene. She has a lot to say. She speaks her mind, and she'd make a good commentator."
Yes, she would, so let us be the first to extend the offer asking Monica Conyers to appear on "Let It Rip." We'll let you know if she accepts.
