Office Party Etiquette 101

Posted: Updated:

With Christmas just a few weeks away, a lot of people will soon be heading to a company party -- but if you indulge in too much egg nog, you may be afraid to show your face at the office the next day.

Even Santa Claus won't be able to help spread holiday cheer among coworkers if you're more naughty than nice, but Business Etiquette Consultant Liz Taylor says office holiday parties are back in a big way and she has some tip to keep trouble away.

"It's about relaxing and having a good time -- but using common sense and better judgement," she explained. "I've heard of way too many cases where there were employees who were let go because of overextending themselves on the drinks or having too much alcohol -- saying something they shouldn't have."

Taylor says even at a casual happy hour with coworkers, you should limit yourself to just a few drinks and avoid controversial topics like religion and politics -- as well as the temptation to reveal confessions.

"You don't want to wake up the next morning and be thinking, 'What did I say to Bob? I can't believe I admitted a crush,'" Taylor said. "You want to avoid that."

Yet, the best way to survive the company Christmas party is to leave the office politics at home.

"It's a good thing. It helps with morale and employees -- makes people feel engaged and welcome," Taylor explained. "Again, it goes back to knowing what your limits are and sticking to those and being careful."

Another thing to leave at home is your cell phone. If you're paying attention to that instead of those around you, your boss might remember that on Monday.
