State Sen. Donne Trotter faces felony weapon charges

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Powerful Democrat Donne Trotter was flying out of O'Hare Wednesday morning when TSA agents found a handgun and bullets.

Sources tell FOX 32 News that the TSA called the feds first and told them what was going on. The FBI said the veteran state senator should not be charged with a federal crime.

But when TSA called Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez's office, sources say, charges against Trotter were quickly filed.

State Senator Donne Trotter was arrested and booked around 8 o'clock at O'Hare International Airport.

Trotter was going through TSA's security when a unloaded .25 caliber handgun and a 6-bullet clip was found in his black carry-on bag.

Sources say the senator told TSA agents that he had been working the night before and didn't realize the weapon was in his bag.

Those agents, sources say, immediately called the FBI. When the feds were told who was carrying the handgun and that it was registered and trotter was carrying his permit, sources say the feds said "let him go".

Moments later, sources say, the Cook County States Attorney's office was called and when that office found out that a "known" public official was involved, State Senator Donne Trotter was put in handcuffs.

The senator is one of the leading contenders in the 2nd congressional race to replace former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.

Trotter and some of the other candidates were on FOX 32 Sunday morning. Trotter talked about his political experience and integrity.

"It's about one who has proven, looked at, and also understood proven leadership in the district," Trotter said.

People in that district are talking about what they call "Trotter's mistake."

"Mistakes happen, but I don't forget when I carry my gun with me," one person said.

"I mean, I would have to hope that that part is true," another person said. "I mean TSA is so strict, you would have to think, you know, you would have to think that that was most definitely an error---an accident."

Trotter will be transported from the jail Thursday morning and will appear in bond court at 26th and California just before noon.
