WASHINGTON -

D.C. Police say Javon Foster, the suspect in the shooting that killed a mother and injured her 23-month-old child, has apparently killed himself in New York.

Police say he was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, and through fingerprints, it was confirmed that the person was Foster.

Law enforcement sources tell FOX 5's Paul Wagner that he killed himself in Hempstead in Nassau County in Long Island.

The bus shooting occurred about 5:40 p.m. Sunday near Minnesota Avenue and 19th Street. Police say 20-year-old Selina Brown was boarding the bus when she was shot.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 23-month-old daughter was grazed by a bullet in the shooting and was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. She will need reconstructive surgery to her face. The bus driver also sustained a non-life threatening injury.

On Monday, police sought 27-year-old Javon Steven Foster in the killing.

According to court records, Foster has a history of domestic violence against women. In 2010, he was found guilty of assaulting another girlfriend and he was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Brown is the daughter of a D.C. Police officer. Derrick Ferguson, a 16-year veteran of the department, could barely keep his composure as he talked Monday afternoon about his daughter Selina.

She was a 20-year-old who had finally had enough of a troubled relationship.

"I tried to get her to go into the Navy," says Ferguson. "I tried to get her to file complaints. She just wouldn't listen."

Selina's mother says her daughter was arguing with her boyfriend all weekend long. It was an argument she says that ended at the bus stop when Selina decided it was over.

"She would say things, but when I tell her, ‘Okay, let's go file this complaint,' the next morning, she would be on the phone with him laughing and giggling," says Ferguson.

Family members say the couple had been dating for a few years and had a child together.

Kodi is 23 months old and was shot along with her mother. Family members describe the injury as a graze wound to the face.

In the seconds after the shooting, the bus driver hit the accelerator and took off down Minnesota Avenue in order to get away.

D.C. Police were back at the scene Monday morning, looking through the grass and leaves for additional evidence.

"It's crushed my family," says Ferguson. "From my youngest brothers to her mother to me, it's just crushed us."

Family members say the police didn't have to look far for the shooter. The surveillance camera on the bus recorded the attack.
