Just days after the deadly shooting in Newtown, Connecticut a student at Marquette Elementary Middle school in Detroit was taken into custody for bringing a loaded handgun to school.
The 13-year old student is in the seventh grade and has since been transferred to a youth home. He reportedly told investigators he brought the gun to school because he felt threatened.
Detroit public schools informed parents the 38-caliber gun was found Monday during regular security procedures at the entrance to the school and released the following statement.
A communication was sent to parents this morning to assure them that the
regular security procedures at the entrance to the school successfully
identified a weapon brought by a student this morning. The school
contacted the student's parent.
Safety will always be our top priority and Detroit Public Schools has many
systems in place at all schools to ensure the safety and security of
children and adults.
