Off-Duty Cop Stops Teen In Attempted Robbery At SEPTA Station

PHILADELPHIA -

An off-duty police officer in plainclothes stopped a would be teen robber at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia Thursday morning.

According to a SEPTA spokesperson, Officer Tim Catto was waiting for the El train at 34th and Market when he noticed a group of young men watching a female University of Pennsylvania student who had her iPhone out.

Investigators say the group of men and the student all boarded the same train.

At 30th Street, SETPA says the 14-year-old allegedly grabbed the student's iPhone and got off the train. That's when Officer Catto followed, grabbed the phone and attempted to stop the teen suspect.

The two struggled for several minutes as other SEPTA passengers waiting at the station called police.

SEPTA says the 14-year-old is now in custody and may be connected to other cell phone thefts at SEPTA stations.
