Newtown priest urges community to celebrate Christmas

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A priest in Newtown, Connecticut is urging devastated and heartbroken residents of his community to celebrate Christmas.

Monsignor Robert Weiss urged people to celebrate Christmas with prayers for hope, healing and peace. In a church bulletin he wrote: "We know that some hearts in this town will be broken again on Christmas morning when that one special person is not there to open their gifts."

Weiss, the head of the Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church, says he knows the pain is not over, but thinks prayer will allow the grieving community to celebrate the day in its truest sense.

Weiss also said this has been the "worst week" of his life, as the town buried the 20 children and six adults killed in a shooting rampage at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.
