PHILADELPHIA -

Police are searching for the driver who slammed into a woman walking on a sidewalk Christmas Night in the city's Kensington section.

The incident happened on the 3100 block of Frankford Avenue near Lippincott Street around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

According to police, the driver was turning into a parking lot when she struck a woman who was walking on the sidewalk.

Police tell FOX 29's Stephanie Salvatore a camera from the Dollar Store was pointed in the opposite direction, so they aren't sure exactly how the woman was hit.

Residents say drivers often use the sidewalk to make u-turns and, in this case, may not have seen anyone walking.

A witness tells FOX 29 he yelled for help after seeing the woman get hit just feet from his doorstep.

The woman was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Neighbors call the entire situation tragic.

Investigators are now in the process of talking with family members of the victim before they release her name.

Police say they are also talking with witnesses to get a better description of their suspect and the vehicle.

Police say the driver is in her 40s and was seen driving a black car.
