NYE revelers party the night away on Mill Ave

Posted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -

The new year is almost here and one place that will be packed with excitement and entertainment is in Tempe.

The Tempe Block Party is one of the bigger new year's celebrations in the country.

For the first time in many years, there will be no gates around Mill Avenue, no admission fee and no street closures around downtown Tempe on Dec. 31. Area restaurants and bars will be offering entertainment for the night (however some may have their own cover charges).

For those well under 21, there were family fun activities from 6 to 9 p.m.

Beginning at 9:30 p.m., dance-pop duo S.O.S. and bluegrass/Americana/folk-pop group Jared & The Mill will both be performing. Two fireworks shows will light up the night at 9 p.m. and midnight.

Those coming to Mill Avenue on Dec. 31 are encouraged to use public transportation or to take advantage of taxicab services that will be in the area. Tempe buses run until 2 a.m., as does the light tail.

Public parking costs vary from $5 to $20 in the downtown Tempe area.
