NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A strong smell of natural gas forced the evacuation of the New York Port Authority Bus Terminal Wednesday morning, according to fire officials.

The south wing of the terminal at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan was closed and evacuated for a short period of time.  It reopened just after 9 a.m.

All passengers on NJ Transit buses will board and discharge on 10th Ave. due to police activity, according to @NJTransit_Nbus.

SkyFoxHD was over the empty ramps that lead into and out of the terminal.

Buses could be seen pulling over several blocks from Port Authority to let passengers off.

The issue at the bus terminal was causing problems at the Lincoln Tunnel because the bus lane into the tunnel was closed and buses remained backed up as they entered surface streets on the New York side of the tunnel.

Travelers were advised to avoid the Lincoln Tunnel Wednesday morning as residual delays were extensive.
