An amazing photo a Peoria father snapped of his daughter's birth has gone viral. The picture shows his daughter, who was delivered via C-section, reaching out of her mother's womb and clutching the doctor's finger.
Alicia and Randy Atkins say they've had an overwhelming response to this photo they posted on Facebook last week.
"it just went crazy, within one day it was up to 1,000, next day had 10,000 views," says mother Alicia Atkins.
The picture, taken October 9th, shows their little girl being born via C-section grabbing onto the doctor's finger. Father Randy Atkins took the photo.
"The doctor called me over and said you got to take this picture you got to take this picture and I go over and she's grabbing his hand. It was just amazing and I just took the shot," says Randy.
"We knew that weekend she was ready to come out and it just proved how ready she was," says Alicia.
Alicia, a professional photographer, takes partial credit, joking that she trained her husband well.
But she admits she didn't get the gravity of the photo until a few days later when she looked at it on the computer, as opposed to a tiny digital camera screen.
"I just knew it was such an amazing photo."
The Atkins says they've had offers to sell the photo but Alicia says she won't sell the copyright.
"It's just a special moment for her, I just don't want to give it completely away."
Nevaeh, which is heaven spelled backwards, is now almost 3 months old and still holding onto fingers. This time it's her daddy's.
The Atkins gave their doctor, Doctor Allen Sawyer, a 20 by 30 canvas of the photo.
He says it's rare for a baby to grab the doctor's hand like that during a C-section but says he's never seen it captured on camera.
They plan to put one in the baby's nursery too.
