Water Main Break Leaves Mt. Holly Residents Without Water

Posted: Updated:

New Jersey American Water workers are digging well into the night to find the source of a 6 inch water main break that happened on Mount Holly Avenue. The call came in around 4:30 Thursday afternoon. The entire block between Garden and Mill Street is blocked off and the water is turned off to about 40 homes.

Kim Mitchell is worried about how she will make it through the night. She said, "We can't use the toilets. I'm a nurse. I have a patient who's paralyzed. He has no drinking water or water for his medicines."

Joe Spence with NJ American Water of Mt. Holly said the leak could be any one of three mains but they're making progress. He said shutting the water off quickly is important especially during frigid temperatures which cause freezing on the road. Luckily the break appears to be minor. No water was visible aside from trickling down the sides of the street.

"If things go well we'll have them on in a couple hours , before midnight and we'll be finished up here and everyone will take their morning showers," said Spence.

A spokesperson for New Jersey American Water called it a routine break because of old pipes underground. He said they will be going door to door giving bottled water to people who need it to help ease the inconvenience.
