Man regrets calling cops on roommate with sledge hammer

MESA, Ariz. -

Thursday, we brought you a dramatic 911 call for help from an east valley man whose roommate went on a rampage with a sledge hammer.

The call is tough to listen to, even for the man who made it. Ron Nichols says he was scared when he called for help, but now that his friend is in jail, he wishes he would have handled things differently.

"I knew things were not going to end well."

You can see by the home's shattered windows things didn't end well at this east Mesa home. In a moment of desperation on New Year's Eve, Ron Nichols called 911.

911 call: "Please ahh ahh oh my god oh my god oh no you have to help me."

Behind a locked door, Nichols told officers his longtime friend and roommate Jeffrey West was attacking him with a sledgehammer.

West apparently was hacking away at the door to get to his friend.

"I was behind the door and he was angry and upset and something had set him off, but he loses touch with reality," says Nichols.

911 call: "He's threatening everybody. He's beating on the door help me help me ahhh!"

Nichols was afraid when he made that call, but today, he has a moment of clarity.

"My friend Jeff West has a brain injury."

He defends his friend and nearly blames himself for West's arrest. SWAT officers had to forcibly remove west from the home because he was ignoring officer's commands.

"I feel bad because I let my friend down. We could have done it differently. We've done it differently in the past, next day he wakes up apologizing – ‘Ron I'm sorry, the brain injury, the drugs, a little bit of alcohol.' he's just one who has a lot of problems," explains Nichols.

West is charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.
