Report: Sandy wrecked 95,000 structures on LI

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) -- Sandy damaged or destroyed more than 95,000 buildings on Long Island and left behind 4.4 million cubic years of debris.

That's according to FEMA statistics obtained by Newsday.

Of the 948,540 households, 10 percent had some flooding or storm damage. More than 38,000 structures had damage totaling more than 50 percent of their value. And 182 buildings were destroyed.

The flooded-damaged structures included 44 power substations or other electrical facilities, 28 fire houses, 26 schools, three police stations and one medical facility.

According to FEMA, it has received applications for disaster relief assistance from nearly 114,000 Long Islanders.
