Maday convicted of charges in 2009 high-profile escape

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

An Elk Grove Village man who escaped from custody and went on a day-long crime spree in suburban Chicago has been convicted of all charges at his federal trial.

A jury Wednesday convicted Robert Maday on multiple charges, including escape and bank robbery.

The 42-year-old faces a mandatory minimum sentence of nearly 50 years in prison. Defense attorney Anthony Sassan told reporters outside court that he expects his client to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

In 2009, Maday overpowered two guards as they drove him to the Rolling Meadows courthouse for a sentencing hearing in a series of suburban robberies. Prosecutors say he then led authorities on a pursuit that included carjackings, a bank robbery and a high-speed chase that ended in a crash and his recapture.
