CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Up until now, a major advertising campaign for a shampoo or deodorant might go as far as giving away tickets to the Super Bowl.
That seems quaint compared to the newest promotion from the people at AXE Body Spray. They're giving away free trips to space.
AXE is teaming up with Space Expedition, a company that plans to start space-tourism flights next year. It uses a spacecraft called the Lynx made by X-Core Aerospace. Through an online contest, AXE will give 22 people free space flights.
The spaceship seats just one pilot and one passenger, so the winners will go one at a time for a trip that lasts about one hour. It goes 64 miles high--a sub-orbital flight--but high enough, AXE says, for each passenger to officially be considered an astronaut.
Space tourism is about to literally blast off as a real industry and a real way for people to take adventure vacations.
People are already signing up and Space Exploration says it's already booked more than 200 flights. A flight on space edition's Lynx ship normally costs $95,000.
Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic could start space-tourism this year, for $200,000 per flight.
The companies all seem to be taking safety very seriously, but there's always a certain risk when you fly that high. Doctors are expressing concerns about the wear-and-tear space travel has on the body. Some experts are calling for medical regulations to ensure space travelers can physically handle the extreme G-force.
