Keep your home's pipes from bursting during the freeze

Posted: Updated:
PEORIA, Ariz. -

We're in for the biggest cold snap in more than 20 years.  The hard freeze could even burst your home's pipes if you don't take precautions.

The number one homeowner mistake is not covering outside pipes properly.

"Take a wet towel and wrap around the outside of a pipe. The towel will freeze first and it will act like an igloo. Give it an igloo effect, so you're less likely to have your main coming into your house freeze," says Jim Needham of Plumbing Masters in Peoria.

Needham says forgetting to turn on faucets is another common mistake.

"Don't let your faucets open full blast. It's just a drip, not even a stream, all you need is a drip to keep the movement so it won't freeze."

Needham says pools are also at risk during a freeze.

People should look for the pressure vacuum breaker, which is usually connected to a hose bib in the backyard.

"It's really important to shut these off and open these little ones. I would shut the irrigation off to your house. That should be right by your main shut off valve."

Needham advises people to shut off swamp coolers too. If you turn on your faucet and no water comes out, call a plumber immediately.

Keep pipes from freezing:

  • Simply wrap it in a couple of layers of towels and secure with duct tape
  • Slightly crack open a couple of faucets or hose bibs
  • Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature during both day and night
  • Disconnect garden hoses
  • If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, leave the faucets turned on and call a plumber.
