Flu epidemic: what you need to know

Emergency rooms across the country are seeing a spike in flu cases.

Health experts say there is an influenza epidemic in the United States.

Good Day NY spoke with Dr. Robert Glatter, Emergency Medicine Physician-Lenox Hill Hospital, about his experience handling the recent increase in flu cases and what everyone needs to know about the epidemic.

"We're seeing a lot of flu cases early on. Typically the flu season really starts late January," said Dr. Glatter.

"If you got the flu shot, it's not likely you'll get the flu. But vaccination rates are low; only 36-37 percent and that's what ultimately causes the severity of these outbreaks."

So if you get the flu, what should you do?

"Get plenty of rest, plenty of fluid and try to avoid people who have active symptoms," said Dr. Glatter.
