14 year old shot & killed in Humboldt Park

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A boy just days away from his 15th birthday is gunned down right outside his Humboldt Park home.

Rey Dorantes likely never saw it coming. Family members tell Fox 32 News he was sitting outside texting and talking on the phone when several shots were fired. When the smoke cleared he was dead.

Family and friends say Dorantes had a bright future but it was abruptly cut short late Friday night when he was gunned down while sitting on his front porch. Fox 32 News has learned the shooting was likely gang related though family members paint a very different picture.

"My son is a beautiful beautiful son, he doesn't have problems with nobody, he's helped everybody, he was doing real good in school and I don't know. I can't understand why these people do this, kill innocent people, you know," said Esteban Dorantes, the teen's father.

Dorantes recalled the terrifying moments before he saw his son bleeding to death in the foyer.

"My son, he was sitting right here, he used the phone, I go to the store, I said I'll be back. We came back. I told him let's go inside because it's late Papi and he said I'll be there in a minute so I go to use the washroom and I listened to the shots," said Dorantes.

"We came running. We knew, I knew in my heart that unfortunately it was Rey that was hit and I opened the door and there he was laying in the hallway face down," said JoAnn Tenev, the teen's step mother.

Chicago police say two men approached the teen and opened fire. The gunshots also ricochet to the house next door, shattering a front window.

Dorantes who was sitting outside on a bench was struck and killed. He was a freshman at Roberto Clemente Community Academy who enjoyed swimming and Play Station with dreams of joining the Army upon graduation.

He died just four days shy of his 15th birthday.

On Saturday afternoon, unmarked police cruisers patrolled the neighborhood on the 2400 block of West August Boulevard in Humboldt Park while family members urged those who saw something to say something.

"I know somebody saw something. If the police know they walked to the corner and got in the car then they know something and somebody is just not saying anything and it's wrong. Rey needs justice. They need to find out who took this little boy from his father," said Tenev.

Dorantes had three bothers.

Fox 32 News has learned Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett was notified early Saturday morning about the shooting. Crisis counselors and police are expected to be on the Roberto Clemente Community Academy campus Monday morning.
