WASHINGTON, DC -

As a white ASPCA van rolls into Washington, thirteen animals get a little closer to home.

They are dogs and cats rescued after Hurricane Sandy. Anna Strates from the Washington Animal Rescue League went to New York to retrieve them from a giant warehouse that served as a temporary shelter.

"We've had animals that were surrendered. They knew they'd lost everything. They cared enough about their animals to give them up," says Strates, as she fights back tears. "There was this one man that would come in every day to take care of his dog. And another small little Russian woman who came in every day to take care of her fat little Chihauhua. She would feed him whole carrots and she would come in really grumpy and by the end she'd be happy and warm and she still had no place to live," says Strates.

What the animals need now is rest.

"They definitely need de-stressing time. An emergency shelter is a stressful environment. Not the most perfect place for them to be. They're in crates. They don't get as much exercise as they might truly need," says behavior specialist Lisa Stemcosky.

It'll be days, and for some, weeks before the animals are ready for adoption.

"Bringing them here just brings it all full circle for me. I know that they'll have a great home," says Strates. A happy ending and a new beginning.
