CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Thousands of city workers could lose their health coverage. The Retiree Health Care Commission has found the city can no longer afford to pay health benefits for retired city workers.
Last year the city paid out $109 million for 37,000 retired workers and their families. That cost could soar to $541 million within ten years if cuts aren't made.
The commission said one option would be to phase out the benefits and have retirees cover themselves, through the insurance pools being set up under Obamacare.
The health care commission was created by Mayor Emanuel.
