Phoenix police say officers responding to a reported burglary fatally shot a man who ran from a house and pointed a weapon at the officers.

Police were called out to the Ahwatukee neighborhood of 41st Street and Elliot about a possible burglary, around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

When they arrived, officers saw a man running out of a home. The suspect reached for what was believed to be a weapon and police fired several shots at him.

They then evacuated the area to make sure no one else was involved. It turns out there was only one burglar.

"It sounded like gun shots... but in this neighborhood you really don't hear anything like that at all," said neighbor John Roberts.

"It's scary, I've got two children, it's supposed to be a safe neighborhood, I've been here for 16 years," said Amy Eidell.

Residents have since been allowed back into their homes.

The suspected burglar, identified as 27-year-old Cody Gene Criner, was rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition and later died from his injuries.

According to police, the shooting occurred in the street near the home after Criner ran out of the house and pointed what turned out to be a pellet gun at officers chasing him.

The investigation is ongoing.
