TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Tucson city councilman wants the city to ban gun shows at the Tucson Convention Center until the state or federal governments require background checks for every gun sale.

Councilman Steve Kozachik says allowing gun sales without background checks is a threat to public health and safety and that Tucson should be sensitive to that because of the January 2011 mass shooting.

Kozachik says he'll propose the ban during the council's Feb. 5 meeting.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, a ban would affect a single company that holds several shows a year at the Tucson facility.

Owner Lori McMann of Phoenix-based McMann Roadrunner Gun Show says her company obeys the law and that she doesn't understand why the city would want to keep turn away her business.
