Snap Out Of Your Winter Doldrums

Posted: Updated:

Fewer hours of daylight, irritating cold and cloudy skies can drive some people into a serious depression.

For some people, the depression can be part of a serious problem called Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD for short. Doctors say SAD, which can start in your teens and get worse as you age, is a serious problem for thousands of Americans.

While some may suffer from SAD, others just feel sad around this time of year and aren't sure why.

Dr. Lynn Bornfriend says some people can go through everything from heavy weight gain to a whole lot of sleeping as part of the disorder.

It may feel like it's all over until spring, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Health experts recommend you get outside and try something new.

Whether it's taking a 15-20 minute walk, even if it's a little cold outside, to trying yoga, health experts say it will get your energy up and will help you burn off those extra carbs you crave.

You could also try a new diet or replace the alcohol or beer with more energy boosting health snacks.

You can see some other tips and watch the story from FOX 29's Joyce Evans in the video above.
