PHILADELPHIA -

A large crowd was on hand Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Center for the Flyers open practice, held just a few days before the team's season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The practice, free to Flyers fans, was held as part of a week-long series of events planned by the team following the end of the NHL lockout.

"We have the greatest fans in the world," Comcast Spectator President Peter Luukko said in a statement.

"This is our way of saying 'thanks for your patience and understanding.'"

Prior to Thursday night's practice, the team allowed fans to attend their training camp sessions at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, New Jersey.

The Flyers open the season Saturday against the Penguins at home at 3 p.m.
