Bloomberg urges mayors to press Congress on guns

Posted: Updated:

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is calling on the nation's mayors to pressure members of Congress to support President Barack Obama's gun violence proposals, saying "we know what it's like and they don't."

Bloomberg said in a speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors that mayors remain on the front lines and deal with gun violence on a daily basis, often comforting families of shooting victims. Members of Congress, he said, are "more removed from this issue."

Bloomberg said mayors need to push lawmakers to support Obama's sweeping plan after the deadly shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

The billionaire mayor, who has used his own money to push gun-control causes, said he will support members of Congress who support the plan and "remember those who don't."
