Hundreds Go Door-To-Door In Abducted Girl Case

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Nearly 200 members of the Muslim community gathered at the Bryant Elementary School on Friday then walked the surrounding neighborhood looking for information on the woman who abducted a 5-year-old girl right out of her classroom Monday.

"We just pray that this thing can be brought to justice," said Imam Asim Abdul Rashid, the little girl's grandfather. "I'm hoping they're arrested and put away the rest of their life."

Teams of Muslim men and women went door to door to appeal to their neighbors here to come forward with information that could lead to an arrest. They walked the same blocks police canvassed earlier this week.

"Any kind of information they may have that will lead to the prosecution and the conviction of the ones responsible for this heinous crime," said Imam Farid.

While police say the search for the woman and her male accomplice remain a top priority, detectives are running down leads, processing tips and interviewing family members, trying to determine who knew the child's routine.

The kidnapper had her name, her classroom and the savvy to get the little girl to willingly leave the school with her.

"We've been frustrated from day one," said Imam Abdul-Rashid. "We've been talking close with the police. And they've been doing all that they can at this point. We're satisfied with that

The kindergartner was held in an unknown residence within walking distance of the school. She was blindfolded and stashed under a bed before she was released and carried through Cobbs Creek Park to this nearby park in Upper Darby where a passerby spotted her hiding under a sliding board.

"This should not have happened at all," Imam Abdul-Rashid said.

"Who knows what could happen walking in the street. If a little child got snatched, I mean nobody's too big to get snatched," said Martitha Wallace, who has two children at Bryant Elementary.

Police went door-to-door in the community around the school on Wednesday hoping to find the house where she was held, but that proved fruitless.

Investigators hope the $10,000 reward is an incentive for someone to talk.
