West Philadelphia -

Life didn't start off easy for Kara. He was born a stray in Central Turkey.

The village tradition: "If you can't take care of them they put them in a swift running river, but they keep one,"explained Kara's owner  Ayse Salzman.

Kara was picked as the lucky survivor from that litter of six.

He survived one obstacle only to face another.

"He'd tried to nurse from a mother and she was so ill nothing would come out."

Salzman helped nurse Kara to health, then flew him to her home in Philly, where their bond blossomed.

"He would just put his face next to mine. It just made me very, very happy."

That happiness is missing these days.

Kara ran away in December while walking home with Ayse's husband Laurence.

"For whatever reason, I wasn't holding him that firm. And he just pulled away and ran across the street."

Now, the Salzmans spend their days putting up reward posters in Mantua where he was last spotted. They're also checking animal shelters three days a week.

Ayse carries kibble in her pockets and Kara's favorite toy and harness are on the fence outside their West Philly home.

"We're waiting for the next call and thinking about his sweet face. Hope lights up my path."

The Salzmans say they just want their dog back safe and sound. They're also offering a reward.
