Authorities: 7 arrested during NJ nightclub melee

Posted: Updated:

LINDEN, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say seven people were arrested and two police officers were assaulted when a melee broke out at a northern New Jersey nightclub last weekend.

Linden police went to the Dragonfly restaurant and nightclub around 2:10 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a large fight. They found an unruly crowd of about 200 people there, and several new fights soon broke out as officers tried to disperse the crowd with the assistance of police from several nearby towns.

Authorities say two officers were assaulted as the crowd was being dispersed, including a Linden officer who was taken to a hospital with a knee injury. He was later released.

Six of the seven people arrested face rioting charges, while two of them were charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.
