SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- A local teacher and his eighth grade students are hosting a special night at the Barnes and Noble in Rochester Hills to raise money for Rett syndrome research.
Rett syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that strikes girls between the ages of one and two. These girls, who were born healthy and normal, start to regress losing the ability to walk, crawl and even speak. The brain is left intact, so girls with the disorder are trapped inside their own bodies.
The fund raiser will be held on Thursday, January 24 at the Barnes and Noble on Rochester Road. The students will present special projects from 6:00 to 8:15 p.m., and the store will be donating 20 percent of its proceeds to a Rett research group called Girl Power 2 Cure.
