Students at a Tempe high school are in mourning after a student was killed in a tragic sledding accident on Sunday.
17-year-old Jake McGrady and 11 of his high school classmates were sledding in Mountainaire, just south of Flagstaff.
McGrady was on a sled with a friend when they somehow lost control and hit a tree. After being transported to a hospital, McGrady died during surgery on Monday afternoon.
Students at Corona Del Sol High School received shocking news on Tuesday when they found out McGrady had passed away.
Crisis counselors were on hand Wednesday to be a shoulder to cry on for McGrady's classmates.
"I had him in my class and I was really sad, and a lot of people were crying, but my teacher was nice enough to let everyone take a few minutes," says student Ashley Bonner.
"Yesterday our school psychologist and I went to all of Jake's classes, and we spoke to the kids and let them know if anyone needed any help processing this or anyone to talk to that they can come down and see us," says guidance counselor Angela Carter.
FOX 10's Steve Krafft reports.
