SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- You may think a glass or two of wine in the evening may help you sleep better, but new research says it may be just the opposite.
A new review of 27 studies says a nightcap allows healthy people to fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply for awhile, but it ultimately reduces the amount of rapid eye movement sleep. That's the third stage in the sleep cycle when people dream.
We usually slip into REM about 90 minutes after we fall asleep.
Disruptions in REM sleep may lead to daytime drowsiness and poor concentration and might prevent you from sleeping as long as you should.
Alcohol also suppresses breathing and can lead to sleep apnea.
