Snow Makes For Slow-Moving Friday Commute

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A week of frigid temperatures plus snow means a messy drive tonight.

This is the first time all season the ground is so cold that the snow will not melt right away. It's gotten icy fast on many area roads.

The first major incident was a vehicle fire on southbound Interstate 95, south of I-676. Lanes were temporarily closed but reopened just after 5 p.m.

FOX 29's Kacie McDonnell reports commutes times were double or triple their normal times on many area highways by dinner hour.

Live Ultimate Doppler HD is tracking light snow that's continuing to fall across the area right now.

Southern and Western counties in our area began seeing snow by mid-afternoon. The flakes were flying in Philadelphia a little before 4 p.m.

By later tonight, the snow should taper off to flurries, and by midnight it should all be over.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. until 1 a.m. for all of South Jersey, Delaware and the Philadelphia metropolitan area, so you can expect about 1 to 2 inches in these areas. There maybe a few pockets where you might get 3 inches, but it is not a major whopper of the snowstorm.

CHECK: Latest Weather Warnings, Watches, Advisories

Temperatures today remain quite cold. This morning we were in the teens in Philadelphia and Wilmington, with a single-digit wind chill, and they were in the single digits in Mount Pocono, where the wind chill was -7.

So, don't let down your guard. Bundle will up today and tomorrow, as well.

After the snow ends, we will see wind pick back up. Then, we'll get back above freezing on Sunday.

There will be a warm-up by the middle of next week, when we'll get to as high as 54 degrees!
