The Kilpatrick Civic Fund espoused lofty goals. But in 10 years of reporting on the nonprofit's activities, I have yet to see proof that it spent any of the more than $1.8 million it raised on its noble purpose.

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick walked out of a city lockup Monday morning after spending the weekend behind bars on parole violations.
Kilpatrick flashed the peace sign as he was driven away from the Detroit Reentry Center just before 7 a.m. A short time later, he was back in a federal courthouse where he's on trial for alleged corruption in a complete separate matter.

Kwame Kilpatrick was in isolation the entire weekend. He had no visitors and there were no problems at all," said FOX 2 legal analyst Charlie Langton, who spoke with Corrections Department spokesman Russ Marlan. "I also understand from talking with Todd Flood, Kwame Kilpatrick's attorney, that he was preparing for this federal case."
The Michigan Department of Corrections Friday said Kilpatrick committed 14 violations related to his failure to report certain financial transactions last fall, especially money transfers to his wife, Carlita. He still owes Detroit $855,000 in restitution and is required to report gifts and other income as a condition of his parole.
Kilpatrick agreed to waive the formal process for parole violations and instead serve three days as punishment, Marlan said.
Kilpatrick is charged with a series of crimes related to an alleged scheme to pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars through racketeering and extortion. The government says many of his targets were contractors who did business with the city and were desperate to keep it. His father, Bernard, and a close friend, Bobby Ferguson, also are on trial.
