Merchants who accept credit cards now have the option of tacking on a "checkout fee." The added cost is a result of a big settlement between credit card companies and merchants.
It lets retailers pass on the card processing fee to consumers, which could be 4 percent of your purchase cost. Merchants are required by law to tell customers if they're charging a swipe fee.
