Polar Bear Plunge postponed due to extreme cold

Posted: Updated:

ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) — The extreme cold weather that has put New Jersey into a deep freeze has forced one group to postpone its annual "Polar Bear Plunge" fundraising event until next weekend.

The event staged by the Rotary Club of Asbury Park was due to take place Sunday morning. Funds raised were to go toward restoring the Jersey Shore and supplying safe, quality corneas for transplant to poor patients in medically underserved countries.

But with temperatures in the low teens and wind chills expected to be in the single digits on Sunday morning, club officials said it wasn't safe for people to be at the beach in their bathing suits.

The event will now be held Feb. 2.
