CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Millions and millions of people tuned in to watch the Super Bowl, and including our friends serving overseas. Thousands of Chicago-style pizzas were sent overseas Tuesday.
Thanks to local non-profit group Pizzas 4 Patriots, military men and women in Afghanistan and Kuwait had deep dish pies on Super Bowl Sunday.
Pizza 4 Patriots has been sending pies to service members since 2008. Their mission is to bring service members the comforts of home while they're deployed.
Gov. Pat Quinn has partnered with the group and DHL Express for the project.
Officials announced at the Thompson Center Tuesday that 21,000 pizzas were to be shipped overseas. The pizzas were packed ready to bake and come from Great Kitchens in suburban Chicago.
The pizzas arrived in Kuwait and Afghanistan just in time for Super Bowl Sunday.
Members of the Illinois National Guard serving in Kuwait were able to chow down as the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers vied for the Lombardi trophy.
The troops enjoyed the pizzas and wanted to say thanks for everyone who took part in the effort.
Check out their photos in the gallery above, and in this gallery.
