When you eat matters, Spanish study finds

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- When it comes to healthy eating, we've been told it's not when you eat, it's what you eat.  Now a new Spanish study is tossing out that advice.

Apparently timing is everything.  In a 20 week study of dieters, those who ate their main meal after 3:00 p.m. lost 22 percent less weight than those who ate the bulk of their calories earlier in the day.

Researchers were intrigued because everyone was eating and burning the same number of calories following a Mediterranean style diet.

The theory is that eating later in the day confuses the body's internal clock and might have a negative effect on metabolism.

The experts' advice is to eat breakfast to jump start your metabolism and don't skip lunch to allow for a huge dinner.
