Water main break floods Tempe neighborhood

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Water has been restored Tuesday afternoon after a water main break left 15 households and a post office without water for four hours.

It happened in the area of College Ave and Southern. The break has been repaired, but the neighborhood is still sodden with muddy water.

"I heard this real swooshing sound," says resident Ruth Reeder. "Like the ocean. My front yard looks just like a huge water fountain shooting up, water everywhere."

No homes were flooded -- only yards and roads.

"Thank God for that, that no water got inside, but it did flood up the back yard."

Reeder says the last water main break a few years ago took out her neighbor's driveway.

Officials from Tempe Public Works say the pipes were aged and the break is from "natural causes." The lines are scheduled to be replaced in the next few years.

Earlier, College Ave was completely closed between Southern and Pebble Beach, but it has since been partially reopened.

Cleanup is underway in the neighborhood and expected to be finished by late Tuesday night.
