Widow claims boss' sexual advances lead to suicide

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- The widow of a New York City police officer claims he committed suicide because his supervisor demanded sex from him in exchange for a favorable work schedule and job assignments.

Officer Matthew Schindler's wife, Gina, filed a lawsuit in Queens Supreme Court. It seeks unspecified damages.

It charges that Schindler's career depended on his "submission to the sexual advance" of his married supervisor, Sgt. Christine Hirtzel.

The lawsuit says Schindler told Hirtzel he would kill himself if she didn't end the affair.

It says Hirtzel reported the suicide threat to her supervisor and confessed to the affair.

The father of three shot himself in the head on the LIE on Feb. 13, 2012.

Hirtzel's husband, the NYPD and Gina Schindler declined to comment.
