Geraldo Rivera considering Senate run

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Longtime journalist Geraldo Rivera confirmed on Friday that he is considering running for the U.S. Senate to represent New Jersey.

In a phone interview on Good Day New York, Rivera says he wants to talk to his family, and his employers before making a final decision.  Rivera hosts a show on Fox News Channel, which is owned by News Corporation, the owner of MyFoxNY.com.

"I could bring a fresh outlook," Rivera says.

Rivera is targeting the seat held by 89-year-old Frank Lautenberg.  Lautenberg, the oldest sitting senator has not said if he will seek reelection in 2014.

Rivera said he has already approached some people in the New Jersey GOP about a possible run.  He confirmed on Friday that he is a registered Republican in the state.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker is believed to be a leading contender for the Democratic nomination if Lautenberg retires.
