NYPD sergeant dies of heart attack on duty

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A veteran narcotics police officer died while on duty during a so-called buy-and-bust operation in Brooklyn Friday, authorities confirmed.

Sgt. Patrick Divers, 51, of the Brooklyn North Narcotics team, was waiting in a police car near Myrtle and Nostrand Avenues when he experienced chest pains and apparently had a heart attack at about 10:30 a.m., officials said.

His partners rushed him to Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center in Brooklyn where he went into cardiac arrest and died, the NYPD said.

In a 25-year career with the NYPD, Divers made more than a thousand arrests and earned 35 awards for excellent and meritorious police duty, authorities said.

Divers, a graduate of St. John's University, is survived by his wife, a daughter, and son, the NYPD said.

Video from outside the hospital showed dozens of police officers lined up and salute a departing police van, which was presumably carrying the Divers' body.
