Electronic music, marble tile floor, black and white stenciled walls and table tennis -- a new club dedicated to the sport of ping pong is open for business in downtown Detroit.
"We kind of infuse the game of table tennis, ping pong as some might say, with the social dynamics of music, fun, entertainment, design, elegance and put all that together. What you have is Drive Table Tennis Social Club," explained owner Diallo Smith.
Smith and his wife opened up Drive with a hope to change the way people think about ping pong.
"We wanted to wrap the game of ping pong around some glamour, some elegance, kind of take it out of the rec rooms," said Smith.
It's fun. It's flashy. It's somewhere to hang with your friends. It's also a place the best of the best come to play.
Paul and Danny play in tournaments across the country and hone their skills during league night at Drive.
"I've been playing ever since they opened. I was at the grand opening, and me and my friend Paul have been coming here and playing league nights every Wednesday," said Danny Dulkin. "There's good competition. You get to come play and get good exercise."
The best part about Drive is you don't have to be good.
"We have all kinds of people. We have the serious, Forrest Gump players that come and they're battling out, expert players. We have leagues. We have tournaments. But we accommodate the people who want to learn. We offer training sessions," Smith said.
So whether you're looking to train or just hang out, you can find more information about Drive at www.drive-detroit.com.
